Ilford AC 10m XC Centenary Race / Race For Kev, Hainault - Tuesday 27th December 2022

Sarah Burns: Super chuffed with my 1st cash prize in a running race .
Not sure I can make a career out of it. 1st V40 and the team prize for
East London Runners Women at the Ilford 10 mile mudfest. Not bad for a cyclists.

Cindy Koon: Ran my first 10miles XC organized by Ilford AC. A 3 lap muddy course up and down hills and trying not to get my feet stuck in mud. I was advised by many to tie my laces tightly to stop them coming off my feet, thank you. There were lots of encouraging support from runners from other clubs and spectators watching. As you can see from the photos taken from our wonderful ELR non runners today that we are all smiling even after a tough course. That’s what make these races and runs so special as we get to support, chat and joke around with each other before and after the race. Thank you all.

Caroline Frith - Lady Lifers: I have watched the Sikhs in the City Dawn to Dusk race many times, and always thought who in their right mind would want to run 2k laps around a busy dual carriageway and industrial estate less than 1 mile from my house for many hours?
However this year they did a relay for the first time, so I joined the Lady Lifers team not thinking that a) I'd be having surgery 2.5 weeks before race day and b) it would be -3C and foggy all day! But it was great fun and we came 3rd so not too shabby and I'd definitely do it again.
And the samosas made it all worthwhile #sikhsinthecity

SITC Dawn To Dusk Half Marathon 2022 (22.15k) - 11 laps - Sunday 11th December 2022

I had a very definite walking plan, but I ignored it for much longer than I planned. Very very delighted to have run up that hill 7 times out of 11, and to get a course PB. It was very foggy and cold and my hair went frosty, and I gobbled up the food at the end.
The lengths I'll go to to avoid putting the tree up.

SITC Dawn To Dusk Ultra 2022 - Sunday 11th December 2022

Jose Rodriquez: Yesterday I run the Dawn to Dusk ,Sikhs in the city Ultra. Last year I run it just after being locked up 10 days at home with covid and manage 42 laps in 7:12:24h. This year was the 10th anniversary and the actual course record was set 10 years ago by Nathan Montague who represented several times team GB internationally. ( I thought, base on last year performance and actual fitness, that somehow I had a chance of beating the record...I think I just basically convince myself of it).
I Started running with Rob which was great company, we were going too quick for my plans but the freezing cold of -3C/-4C did not let me slow down as I intended. Rob stopped for a toilet break and then I was on my own. Manage a very even pace until 65km aprox. Then niggles started: achy joints and aquiles worried me a bit so I was slowing down and I made my mind to stop, have a hot drink and some food and see how I felt afterwards. I did gave up on the course record at this moment. The conditions were not great for running and I thought that I'll be happy with doing at least same amount if laps as last year.
Thankfully I felt much better after the coffee and samosa break so I started running and manage to pick up the pace again. I felt surprisingly good for this part of the race and some quick calculations told me I was still with a change of going for the record...so I kept pushing until Dusk arrived and I was asked to stop.
Overall time was 7:51:23. Previous record: same amount of laps but 7:56:05 so I believe that gives me the record for nearly 5 min.
If I learned something yesterday is that I really really hate cold weather and that I'm way too stubborn to give up.

Well done to everyone who ran at the Essex Vets Championships this morning.

Congratulations to
Calvin Bobin - 3rd V65 Male.

A very cold but dry morning at Writtle University campus, saw Calvin Bobin take the third place medal in the Vet 65+ categerory. This was a two lap course of 5.2 miles around sides of fields, alternating between grass and muddy trails. This year the Vet 50+ men’s race was first, followed by the Vet women and finally the Vet 40+ men’s race. (There were no Vet 40+ runners from ELR). The course was mainly flat, but some of the trails were very narrow which meant that overtaking was difficult unless you ran through alot of overgrown grass. There was one down hill slope with a 45 degree angle which was very challenging, otherwise the course was fairly straightforward, albeit bumpy!

Paul Thompson had a great run to finish first ELR man and he was followed by Calvin Bobin, who repeated his success from last year by winning an Essex Championship medal. Next was Ian Mackie, who was returning from an Achilles injury and unlucky to miss out on an Essex medal (5th Vet 65). Then came Ross Lucas on only his second cross country race for the club, finally Michael Wilson and John O’Brien for the men.

Becky Evans was the first ELR woman to finish and narrowly missed out on a championship medal, coming 5th in her category. She was followed by Cindy Koon with another very good run, then came Alexandra RP who was just ahead of Catriona Hoult and finally Diana Rexhepaj.

This year the races were chip timed, which meant the results were available immediately after the finish. Good to see our second claim member Rahana Islam again. All in all a very enjoyable day out with ELR. Thanks to Alexandra for bringing cake today. Definitely a race to recommend and you never know, if you run next year you could walk away with an Essex County medal.

London 10km, QEOP - Sunday 27th November 2022

* Some confusion with a 10k and half at the same time, some runners were sent the wrong way.

Catriona reports: Thanks to Alexandra Rutishauser-Perera for coming out in the rain to support the Olympic Park half marathon and 10km today. It was so nice to have her appear and run with me for a while. Unfortunately it was a bit of a chaotic event, and lots of faster half marathon and 10km runners were sent the wrong way. Luckily for slower runners like me, the marshals had worked out the route by the time I got there and I did the right distance. Even more luckily, I got an unexpected PB (51.55) which was incredible given that I woke up with a bad back and didn't think I'd get round. Well done to Jamie Xavier, Samia Choudhury, Shahib Ali, Amy Martin Richard Guest Caroline Moore, Helen McGuinness and others there too. — at Olympic Park

London Half Marathon, QEOP - Sunday 27th November 2022

Chingford League - Event 4 - Trent Park XC(5m) inc Fraternity & Sorority Cups - Saturday 26th November 2022

Team results Men 7th of 8, Women 6th of 8.


This was ELR's second visit to Trent Park in recent weeks, following the Sunday League fixture at the end of October. This year we ran the 'traditional' Chingford League course, starting in the field on the right hand side of the footpath (coming from the main car park). We were very lucky with the weather, with no rain for the last couple of days and only a hint of a chill in the slight breeze. There was a bigger turnout from ELR than the corresponding race last year, with 21 finishers.
Becky Evans was first back for the women's team with another quality run. Next was Cindy Koon, who was outstanding today and gets faster with every race! She was followed by Cath Perry, on her return to her old training ground from her days with Barnet AC., then Veronica Carrasco just inching ahead of Sandra Preston and then Jane Burton. First back for the men was Karan Gadhia, who capped a remarkable return from injury with a four minute course PB. He was followed by Michael Bamford, who continued his fine form with another top performance. Then came James Nichols, Ashley Faria, Mark Moir and Alex Pickering, who was returning from injury. Full results to follow. A special mention to Andrew Howard, who made his first cross country appearance for the club. The Chingford League now has a break until after Christmas, with the next race on Saturday 21st January at Chingford Plain, Epping Forest. Thanks to everyone who came along today and to Karan for his Biscoff Rocky Road cakes, which went down a treat after the race. The quality of his baking, definitely matches his running! I was thinking maybe next year ELR could organise a trip to Las Vegas for the thanksgiving day 10k race which took place last Thurs. I had just left Casino for the 8am start time. It was a 30 min taxi journey from the strip, most of the run was on a dirt track it was cold & windy, the sun was not hot and I had no long sleeve, schoolboy error. I finished the race, still haven't received my offical time but outside of my PB by my reckoning. No signal on my phone but luckily someone from the organisers dropped me to an area & I was able to get a taxi back, I didn't fancy doing an ultra & having 2 walk/run back to where I had come from. I was apprehensive going into it after the all the rain on Wednesday and this was my longest since May but the conditions today were surprising good. Whilst there wasn't as much mud as I expected, the hills were just as long though.
Cindy was first home for the women's team and Thomas Hyde led the men home but there were brilliant performances across the team and some course PBs!

On Running Squad Race - Wednesday 16th November 2022

ELR Squad were 2nd team.

The On race event in the Olympic velopark
I had to do that one, first because i cannot say no to Nacho , two because i love a race in between travels, three because i really like that brand even if their shoes are a bit narrow for me on long runs!
Caroline, Sandra and I had to be at Eton Manor for the awards nomination at 8-ish so they accomodated us to be on the 1st race even though there was a bit of a misunderstanding on our registration at first...
It was all sorted on time...mostly because the race started 15 mins late and us 4 with James Nichols , Michael Bamford, Kasia Stachowiak, Becky Evans and John O'Brien all started together under the rain while Sarah Burns and her sister Paula were with another team ( i bet they regretted it when they saw we finished second , they did an average of our time !).
Overall it was really good fun, and i could borrow a pair of wider On for the race which seem to have allowed me to run in a time that i hadn't achieved since 2019!
Free pictures, music, a medal and tons of really good free food made the event really worthy...

The heavens opened with a torrential downpour forced even the hardiest of runners inside just before the men's race. A slightly different course to previous years with a quick downhill start before looping round up the big hill for the first time. The second and third laps were longer and took us out to long dark stretches of the course before finishing on top of the hill.
Big shout out Timur, Borislav and Ann for making their Chingford League debuts - hope you enjoyed it and will come back for more!
Rachel Bailey was first ELR home for the women and James Nichols for the men but there were brilliant performances throughout the field! Thanks to everyone for turning up ✨️

Sunday Cross Country League Race 2 - Trent Park, Cockfosters report by Mick Wilson

A group of 27 runners from ELR braved the early morning wet weather conditions to travel to Trent Park in Cockfosters, for the second Sunday League cross country fixture of the season. The rain which had stopped by the time we arrived, made the ground soft rather than muddy and ideal for XC racing. This was the same course as last year - one small lap and two larger laps with some nice woodlands, ending with a steep uphill slog, before turning a sharp right for the sprint to the finish line.
There were some excellent individual performances from ELR today - in a massive field of around 500 runners - too many to mention. Rachel Bailey, who continues to go from strength to strength, finished in 78th position overall and was first scorer for our women's team. Then came Caroline Frith (174th), Becky Evans (196th), Kasia Stachowiak (270th) and Cindy Koon (289th), who completed the scoring for the 'A' team. It was good to see Victoria Charlesworth and Vivienne Eka running in their first cross country races for the club.
Thomas Grimes was first for the men's team, followed by John Henry. Both were amongst the front runners and finished in 11th and 15th position respectively. Mark Moir was next in 106th, James Nichols (109th), Amit Marks (120th), Michael Bamford (147th), then came Ian Mackie in his Sunday League debut (165th) and Calvin Bobin (179th), completing the scoring for the men's 'A' team.
Thanks to everyone who ran today and made it our largest turnout in the Sunday League for a long time. Also to Karan Gadhia, who came along to support and provide us with delicious chocolate cake! We hope to see even more people at the next Sunday League fixture at Fairlands Valley Park, Stevenage on 18th December.

Catriona:-Beachy Head Marathon is a totally crazy idea. It involves 3,900 feet of climbing which is more than Snowdon. It's also stunningly beautiful and - thanks to the wonderful company of friends from Eton Manor who kept me going -lots of fun. We ran the flat bits and the down bits, walked the up bits and stopped for food including vegan sausage rolls (I didn’t think I’d be able to run again after that, but somehow I did).
And we didn't care that it took 5 hrs 50 mins.

Amsterdam Half Marathon 2022 race report by Jakub
It all started with a WhatsApp message. I was added to an ELR group for people going to do the Amsterdam Marathon (or Half). Catriona mentioned there's also an option of a Z parkrun (for the parkrun alphabet challenge) and to be honest this tipped the scale for me. I signed up for Amsterdam Marathon in 2020 but as I'm still rebuilding after a stress fracture last year and I didn't have enough mileage in my legs and I was prepared to give it a miss. However, with the Zuiderpark parkrun on the horizon I realised I could drop to the half and just have a nice weekend in the Netherlands.
The half was starting at 1pm which mean I could save some pennies and stay in The Hague (Amsterdam on the marathon weekend was very expensive) and be closer to the parkrun. I could have a good night's sleep, take a train to Amsterdam in the morning and pick up my number from the expo just before the start. All worked really well, in the morning of the race my garmin gave me "Prime" training readiness (99 out of 100) so the game was on.
While walking to the start line we passed the runners going to the finish line at the Olympic Stadium. There was great vibe about the start, music, DJs and a lot of excited runners. Also, we lucked out with the weather. We had forecasted rain but it turned out to be sunny and up to 17°C. When registering I put a very optimistic 1:38 as expected finish time and was assigned to the 1st wave (sub 1:40 runners). On the day I didn't feel that is in any way realistic so I dropped to the 3rd wave (1:40-1:50 runners, 2nd wave was charity and corporate runners). With 1:44 being my A target I started with the 1:45 pacers but they seemed to be going way too fast so I just listened to my watch, checked the course markers and run to feel. The course was very crowded, probably the busiest I've ever had in any race. This meant that for the whole time I was taking people over, unfortunately some of them walking in the middle of the road. The course is flat but not pannenkoeken flat (that's Dutch for pancakes), it has very nice surface but it runs on tram lines so you have to be looking out where you put your feet. Water and isotonic were served in paper cups and there were also sponges available. I saw them in Berlin and I can say they really give a moment of comfort when you're drowning in your own sweat.
I felt really good on the day and quite quickly got ahead of my A target according to the course markers and my watch. There was a discrepancy between both and I later discovered the watch was correct and the markers were off. They were consistently too early and the distance between 20km marker and the finish line felt like 2km rather than 1.1km. Nevertheless, I managed to surprise myself and finished ahead of my target in 1:42:17. This was my second fastest half marathon result and I was really pleased with that. It was special as the finish was at the 1928 Summer Olympics stadium where the first ever Olympic gold for Poland was won (Halina Konopacka in discus throw, 39.62, WR). Amsterdam Half was an all-round positive experience and I'd be keen to come back for the full distance.
The bad:
Long walk after finish to pick up the bag (nearly got lost)
Marathon branding for a half marathon t-shirt and medal (medal obverse says Amsterdam Marathon but reverse has correct Mizuno Half Marathon)
The good:
Super fast course but not as central as I thought
International race with viable options to take a ferry or a train so you don't need to fly
People know how to pronounce my name

The weekend started off with an early morning dash to The Hague from Amsterdam in pitch black darkness on Saturday morning to take part in the Zuiderpark parkrun, thus completing my parkrun alphabet challenge. Had lovely breakfast in the city centre and explored the place a little too. Then on Sunday it was the Amsterdam Marathon and I was really glad to finish it only two weeks after the London Marathon. My race nearly came to a premature conclusion at 6k when I caught my left ankle on the tramline (see marks on shoe picture) but managed to shake it off. The race is timed every 5k and that comes up on the official app so knowing that my number one supporter Samia Choudhury was tracking me really motivated and inspired me. I must also say a thank you to my sister in law Tasnia Choudhury for all her help. Now it's time to rest and relax I hope.

Sunday XC League: Event 1 - Cheshunt (approx 5 miles) - Sunday 16th October 2022

Cheshunt - Sunday XC League 2022-23 Race #1 Report:

21 members of the ELR faithful headed north to Cheshunt for the start of this season's Sunday XC League.
The circa five mile race course was as dry as we'd seen it in many a year and the sunny and warm conditions were a pleasant surprise to the runners as we headed to the start line. Following the ELR team photograph we were met by a witty gentleman as the race director who made a couple of jokes before sounding the horn for the start of the race.
ELR had no less than six Sunday XC League debutants. The first debutant home for the men's team was the lightning Thomas Hyde in 29th position followed by Mark Moir in 64th. Two other debutants were close behind with Paul Sheraton and Tommy Ho finishing 67th and 74th respectively. Chairman Jacob Stevens finished strongly in 141st position with the ever improving Darminder Bhamra running well to finish in 191st place. The final two of the eight scorers for the men's team were Abdirahman Mohammed Adan finishing in 227th place and James Creed ending up in 241st following their equally good runs at the Chingford League on Wednesday.
The women's team were headed by yet another Sunday XC League debutant with the speedy Rachel Bailey finishing in 102nd position overall, closely followed by Becky Evans in 165th just a week after both ran excellent half marathon times. Kasia Stachowiak finished the race strongly in 222nd despite a bike ride to and from the race! Another immense Sunday League debut saw Cindy Koon end up in 238th position. The fifth scorer was Sandra Preston after a great run to finish in 249th place just a week after an impressive 10k time.
Other notable racers were the ever present Michael Wilson (226th) after his Eindhoven Marathon efforts last Sunday before Ramesh Pala (281st) and Verónica Carrasco España finishing in 308th position. Ann Dunne in 317th was ELRs sixth Sunday League debutant to mark an excellent start to the series for our newer members. Keen Sunday League regular Fiona Day finished in 340th place, immediately followed by the dedicated Alexandra Rutishauser-Perera who finished in 341st after a mammoth journey from the USA yesterday after an impressive sub 5-hour Chicago Marathon result last weekend. Our final finisher was the enthusiastic Kirk Johnson in 359th, a fond runner of these events. John Paul Healy was also a notable racer and completed half of the course however due to injury he was unfortunately unable to continue however he admirably stayed behind to cheer on his fellow ELR teammates. We all hope he'll be ready for Race #2 at Trent Park on Sunday 30th October (10:30am).
Well done to everyone who donned their colours to represent ELR today and thank you to those of you who provided lifts for car shares to remain possible between runners. It would be amazing to have even larger teams for our next Sunday XC League race, we hope to see you all then!

Autumn 100 Race Report by Nat Dye:
I wasn't very hopeful going into my third hundred miler. After a year of frequent minor illness/injury, some underlying medical issues and a patchy summer of training, I wasn't certain I'd finish at all let alone run well.
But I suppose I did. Starting at base camp in the little Thames side village of Goring, I found myself nestled in a pretty slowly moving peloton that forced me to start with a pretty slow jog. This continued for the first of four out and back sections as I shuffled my way along a distinctly unremarkable section of Thames Path. Runners were all smiles as we approached the 25 mile mark to take the path West towards the Ridgeway.
The second leg started about as flat and easy as the first until we took a gentle ascent to the ridge, which also happened to be pretty rooty. So much so - I fell over three times going out and back along one stretch. I felt this effort traversing more difficult terrain and elevation was at least worth some nice scenery but was mostly disappointed, save for a couple of pretty tree tunnels and open field crossings.
Leg 3 was also along the ridgeway and I was a little wary of more roots as dusk fell. But I shouldn't have been. Mile upon mile of road/gravel eventually turned into rutted paths, but at least I wasn't in danger of tripping over roots.
By the time I reached Goring again at 75 miles and at about 1am, something was almost disconcertingly missing. Sure - there were ups and downs as always, but my legs didn't really hurt. This feeling swiftly vanished as I embarked on the 4th leg, again on the Thames Path but with some unexpectedly steep hills. From here on in, the suffering level increased as my pace declined. But at about 84 miles, something strange happened. I arrived at a nice flat section of path as we approached Reading, and somehow found another gear. So having dropped to 14 min miles at best, I was back closer to as sprightly 11 mins per mile. The last 10 miles were a real grind but they always are. But when I arrived at the finish line, I was greeted with a PB by at least an hour, no significant injuries and another solid 100 mile finish.
For the few reading this who might think about entering:
Terrain - mostly fine and 100% runnable
Elevation - under 1000m - a relative luxury!
Weather - I was lucky with rain but the wind got up in exposed areas.
Organisation - Centurion are fantastic. Everything that's normally provided plus their reflective course marking tags make it hard even for me to get lost.

Caroline Frith: Royal Parks Half Marathon Race Report
I entered the ballot for this race last year and found out in February that I had a place. The same week I had to commit to paying my entry fee, I was going through multiple scans, tests and biopsies to find out if I had cancer again. I figured even if I did, October was a long way off, and it would be good to have a goal to aim for. I clearly didn't quite foresee what a shitshow the months ahead were going to be, but I'm really glad I decided to run it when I did.
I have never run it before but everyone told me what a great race it was and they definitely weren't wrong. The weather was perfect, the ELR company awesome and everything went well from the minute I crossed the start line.
My goal was 1.45 and for my average mile pace to start with a 7 - a long way off my PB but something I thought was achievable given what my body has been subjected to over the past few months. I positioned myself near the front of the wave, to make sure I didn't have to waste energy weaving around slower runners, found myself next to Jamie Xavier and also saw Joshua Rees Davies shimmy his way to the front (where he definitely belonged!)
I was over the line within 30 seconds of the start and felt fantastic. The road was wide, there was plenty of space and the first mile went by in 7.38. My mind was saying too fast, but my legs were saying yippee! So the next mile was similar and I was telling myself that it was great to have time in the bank - whilst really hoping I wasn't going to pay for it later. At mile 3 the 1.40 pacer drew up alongside me and I was prepared to let him overtake me, because that wasn't my goal, but I found myself easily keeping up and before long they dropped off behind me. I saw Betty Bohane twice before 5 miles as she was an official volunteer - my word can she cheer! I enjoyed the run around Trafalgar Square, up the Mall, through Wellington Arch, past Buckingham Palace, down Whitehall, past Downing Street and the Cenotaph before we headed back into Hyde Park for 7 miles of twists and turns. Some of the paths were a bit narrow in places but it wasn't too congested so it was fine. I was amused by a couple of large signs announcing 'STEEP DESCENT' before a gentle downward slope - these people have clearly never done Benfleet.
It has been many, many years since I've run a mass participation event like this (remember I'm the crazy person who's run Roding Valley Half 9 times) and I'd forgotten how much of a celebrity you feel as hundreds of random strangers (and a few friends) are cheering you on, screaming your name and telling you how awesome you are just for getting out of bed on a Sunday morning and doing something you love. I honestly haven't felt so alive or had this much fun in a really long time.
A friend stalked me round Hyde Park and kept popping up which was great, as when it was 'just a parkrun to go' I was definitely feeling it. The support was insane, the drummers gave me goosebumps and when I saw the 'only 800m to go' sign I realised I could get in under 1.40.
Thanks to Joshua, Becky Evans and John Paul Healy for the cheers on the way round, Betty for marshalling and Rachel Bailey for keeping me company on the tube. For anyone dithering for next year - this one's definitely worth the entry fee.
Best quote heard by a spectator as I was trying to sprint down the finishing straight - 'Some of these people aren't spring chickens.' I like to think she wasn't talking about me.......

Mike Reports: ASML Eindhoven Marathon and Half Marathon - Sunday 9th October 2022.

I had a very enjoyable three day stay in Eindhoven for the marathon, accompanied by John O'Brien who was running the half-marathon. We arrived very early Saturday morning, with plenty of time to walk the perimeter of the football stadium, have some food and collect our race numbers and tee-shirts from the University building, before checking into our hotel.

The two races had different start times and locations, with the marathon off at 10.00am on Sunday and the half from 2.00pm (in waves). The next morning John walked with me to the start of my race (three minutes from the hotel), with time to fill before his afternoon race. I did not have very high expectations for this marathon and my forecast was around 4.30 under the circumstances. Only one long run (16 miles) and hardly any running in the last month made me question whether I was fit enough to start.

The first few miles went surprisingly very well; I was running within myself, not breathing heavily and importantly showing no signs of soreness or pain in my knee. I aimed to get to half way in under two hours and was happy to reach it in 1.53.26. At this stage I was beginning to believe that there was a chance I could finish in sub four hours again. There is a saying when running a marathon, that ‘half way already’, can very soon change to ‘only half way’! This was certainly the case as I began to slow considerably soon after. At around 16 miles my legs were aching badly and I was unable to keep a decent pace together. At the Eindhoven marathon there are distance signs counting down every kilometre, each with a motivational message on them - from half way until 3km to the end. I knew I would finish without any serious problem but it was very hard work - the last 10k being particularly slow and laborious! The course once you leave the town is fairly rural, with some long, flat, straight roads. At around 36km the route turns onto a tarmac path, with trees each side, (through a forest) and then at 39Km it heads back into the town centre. The support throughout the race was fantastic and I was given encouragement all along the roads and at each feed station. As soon as I hit the town centre at 40k, the cheering was deafening with people yelling out my name continuously on the shopping precincts. (They mostly shouted ‘come on Michael’, but sometimes their pronunciation was Miguel or Michelle!). I wanted to acknowledge everyone but by now I could barely raise a hand or manage a smile. I finished in 4.23.09, close to my original forecast, feeling very very happy! I had vowed to at least enjoy the first half of the race, which I did immensely and the ending was amazing as well! There was a nice touch at the finish area where you could have some photos taken in a van, with your medal and then developed for free.

I walked back to the University campus to get my medal engraved and then made my way to the hotel where I could stand outside and watch the half marathon runners go by, close to the finish. Minutes later John returned and we took the opportunity to have some photos taken. John had smashed it on his debut half marathon and was delighted to finish in a time of 1.56.54. Later that evening we went for a pizza and celebrated with a hard earned pint or two! On the Monday we had the whole day to ourselves and spent a couple of hours on an official tour of PSV Eindhoven’s football stadium and museum.

This was my fifth Eindhoven marathon after 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. I was looking forward to it for so long, but nearly didn’t make it this time because of a bruised knee. However, everything turned out well in the end and I was lucky to have a wonderful time with such great company, in John. Unfortunately, Kirk Johnson who should have been running the marathon as well, was unable to travel and his wit was sorely missed! I am already looking forward to 2023 and hope to keep this an annual occasion, circumstances permitting.

Bank Of America Chicago Marathon - Sunday 9th October 2022

How things change in a few years...When i entered the ballot for Chicago in October 2019, i was craving to do the 6 Abott majors...
Three years later, after 2 years of pandemic, 10 months off running in total due to plantar fasciitis then a knee sprain, i was just happy to be able to run some 5k/5 miles races ideally surrounded by as many trees as possible...
Should i go ahead and do the Chicago marathon ? It probably wasn't reasonable as knee pain prevented me to train properly but since i have a work conference in DC 3 days later why not test my body again and do a combo!
The expectations were very low...finishing it hopefully...under the 6h30 cutt-offs ideally!
So, when i did the parkrun on Saturday with Louise, Ken and the couple of Welsh who drove us, i thought it would be the highlight of my weekend!
I was worried about my knee on the start line that morning but not stressed like i used to on a marathon line...I had asked Guy to show me how to tape my knee and between my 2 knees and my achilles, i was the perfect ad for KY tape! I met a group of spanish people from Burgos in the pen and chatted with them as speaking spanish seems to rise my endorphins level these days...
Then, we set off and the idea was to run as far as i could so i set my pace at about 11.00 min/mile and very quickly met Tim from Seattle because we kept elbowing each other...
He liked the pace and the miles seemed to flew by while running together...i needed a wee at mile 6 and he decided to wait for me...He had planned to walk earlier but felt ok so stayed with me...At mile 9, i saw that he was starting to struggle but i was still feeling very fresh, he let me go a first time then came back but at mile 10, he really needed to walk so i continued on my own...
My pace was consistent at 11mins/mile, i was feeling very comfortable and didn't want to go quicker cause there was a long way to go still and a knee to preserve...
The crowd was unbelievable, to be honest having your name printed on a red vest helps a lot and i kept hearing my name...and the miles were going by...Mile 12, passing just in front of my hotel, the longest i have ran in training...Half-way...15 miles where Grant thought would be my limit before walking...but i was feeling really good...we were passing through different quarters with a different cultural vibe and it was very entertaining...my favorite, of course was the hispanic one but i know i am not objective...i could have stopped to dance salsa at some point...then Mile 20...that was it, the wall was not coming...my thighs were burning but running long distance is about overcoming that pain...and i knew that i couldn't stop now...i had to run till the end...a look at my watch was telling me i could finish under 5 hours which was unbelievable under the circumstances so i was carrying on...As usual,there were so many people walking now...people were shouting that i was looking strong and i was feeling it...for the last few months...i have been struggling mentally...i know that since the Camino, i am in a transition and i am struggling to accept it so i have been feeling weak...but while running...i felt stronger that i had been in a long time...this marathon was the therapy i needed...Mile 23, really just a parkrun to go...more and more music, more and more people, i feel so focused, i don't even feel anything...Then this is it...mile 25...i can still do it in under 5 hours and my legs are still strong so i push, take my pace down to 10 mins/mile to the finish despite that last hill!
And i pass that line...feeling so different than 5 hours before...a stronger person...that's what a marathon does to you...each one of them teaches you a lesson about yourself...so it seems that as my body didn't fail me...i have to sign up for another one next year now...
A spanish one, maybe? For the extra endorphines...Still stupid, i know!
I didn't shout too much about the marathon before hand but many of you knew about it since i needed to explain why i wouldn't be at the CL race at the Velopark ...thanks so much for your supportive messages before, during and after...
I coul feel the love accross the pond!
Oh and you must be wondering about Tim? I found him on the results and sadly he didn't finish and stopped half way ! Hope he is ok !

Alexandra: Oh the parkrun community !!!
I really wanted to do a parkrun in the US: my 7th country and being in Chicago for the weekend was the opportunity !
Only issue: the closest parkrun was an 1h30 drive...Ken, another of my club member and Louise wanted to do it as well, she managed to find another couple on the uk tourist parkrun page and that was it, we rented a car between the 5 of us and left Chicago at 7am this morning for it !
I was much more excited to do this than the marathon ! We were about 50 british tourists out of 67 runners , parkrun is not that popular in the US!

Clocked 3:15:43 at the Cologne marathon today. Not a PB
(only 2 mins short though) but very happy with that,
given the short training block and a less than ideal build up.
My fastest autumn marathon as well (prefer winter training -
sod running in the heat we had 2 months ago!). Very enjoyable
race, fantastic atmosphere near the finish which was near to
the Cathedral.
Amazing selection of food and drink in the finishing zone as
well! Always a great city to spend a weekend, looking forward
to a few pints of Kölsch this eve

TCS London Marathon 20 Mile Drink Station - Sunday 2nd October 2022

Chris Kemp: Adopted my usual spot at mile 20 (Poplar High Street) cheering on the runners and an occasional bit of water distribution thrown in for good measure. Hoping I'll be easy to spot for all QPR Runners.

Bernadett Kalmar: I just wanted to thank all ELR for the support, the enthusiasm, the encouragement ( and the water ) I received last Sunday. I cannot describe what a great feeling it was to run the streets of London with your support! Thank you, thank you and thank you!
Even when i was only just clinging on, you brought a big smile to my face.
I will not write a run report, lets just say, I knew i should have had more long runs ( but I also knew if I had more of those, my heel injury will flare up and I will not get to the start line). I obviously paid the price in the last 10 miles, my time was 37 minutes slower than 6 years ago (5:05). But, i was expecting this. This time, however, I will not need to stop running for a while- because while " training as little as possible", my injury hugely improved and doesn't bother me - I call this success. Success is relative, like everything in life. One thing is objective: ELR is a great club and I am so happy to be a little part of it from the next island!

TCS London Marathon 2022 - Sunday 2nd October 2022

Scott McMillan: London marathon done in a PB of 2:48:33. First half in 1:24:50, second half in 1:23:43. Thanks to the elite cheer squad (pictured), all of those friends and club mates who came to cheer me on on the way round (far too many to mention) and to all who wished me luck and who were tracking me online (far, far too many to mention). Feeling very happy but really quite broken now.

Andrew Howard: Thanks for the well done's and the encouragement. It was an experience money can't buy. The lift I got at 20 miles could have raised the Titanic. And who squirted me? Thank you. I enjoyed it but I shared some of it with my mum when I stopped to give her a big hug.

Scott Hemmens: Well done everyone. PW for me, went out too fast and completely cramped up in the 2nd half. Saw a lot of you guys pass me on the course looking ever so strong including Rob Dixon Jimmy Dale Joseph Babatunde Osakue Mark Boulton .
Special mention to Scott McMillan who looked like he was running for the bus (in a good way).

Shahib Ali: 2022 TCS London Marathon - 3:33:38. Very happy with my time considering my training for this race. As always, an immense privilege to be able to run my home marathon on roads that I grew up and studied on, full of memories, amplified by being able to share these precious moments with my children (my youngest child's first marathon). Imran Mustak report: Marathon journey comes to an end. Respect and thanks to all.
As a child one of my favourite days of the year was marathon day. I use to get up in the morning and spend hours watching runners on tv.
During covid times we had the virtual marathon. Excitedly I entered and managed to complete it in about 7hrs30mins. Brave but perhaps not the best of decisions reflecting how badly I planned my run and difficult I found it.
In 2021 on ballot result day i was having one of them perfect days you get once in a while. I confidently said to my wife my name will come out of the ballot this year and so it did. Unfortunately I got injured last year and had to defer to yesterday.
Come 2022 I knew I had to push myself this year. Whilst I have enjoyed running with ELR for several years as many of you know I would usually be on the tail end of a race. Long distance was certainly not my thing.
My strategy for building up distance was to do 5K/park runs and move on to 10k. I was also introduced to barefoot running. Those that follow me on Strava will know I have been doing this since around March. I started running around 3-4 times a week.
After many weeks of being worried I bravely decided to join the Sunday morning run group. If you are like me and want to begin running long distances I highly recommend joining this group. Very friendly and experienced running group. I learnt a lot about running from them. We did a lot of Sunday running in the forest in the heat often up and down hills including high beach. These runs helped me to gain confidence that I can run a half marathon at a good consistent pace. I feel the hills also helped my feet to gain strength.
I rocked up to Southend half marathon this year to put my training into practice and finished with a time of 2hrs 2 mins. My previous half’s were over 2hrs 30 mins. I could now see my practice and training was starting to impact my times.
I joined an Elvis 5m race 2 days after the half and managed a PB with a sprint finish. Confidence was starting to grow. I did the Elvis at startford and went under 25 mins.
The one thing I knew I needed was a marathon plan and coach to guide me. I finally managed to convince coach Rak from Urban Runners to help me. I reflect on it a bit like Daniel and Miyagi from karate kid relationship but eventually he was like “now I train you Daniel son”. Focus has been much on form and speed and distance will naturally come. This is part of the reason I started running minimalist and thereafter barefoot. I guess the times speak for themselves.
The one thing I found with barefoot running was that it certainly made my feet stronger. Imagine how much easier it may feel from running with no shoes to Alpha’s.
I continued working with the Sunday group to learn how to run a good 10 miles. Eventually I had to up my mileage so I decided to start running from my home to the running sessions. The group were always brilliant in encouraging me to develop my long distance running. Often waiting for me as I arrived late after being lost(thanks). Without them I don’t think I would have ever been able to put in the miles.
I also started running on Wednesdays. Despite being a member of ELR for several years this was my first time I joined in. I wish I had come earlier as it allowed me to gain confidence in developing my speed. Once again I was able to run with people with so much experience and was gaining a lot of knowledge from experienced runners. So many ELR runners have said something and I have grasped it and used it.
I completed the London Marathon in a time of 4.39.35. Thank you all for the tremendous support. Despite getting injured around 25k knowing you were not too far away made me carry on. I was slightly disappointed in my time as I was very comfortable until I started getting shooting pains every so often behind my left calf. I guess injures are part of a marathon and running these type of distances anything can happen. Perhaps the more I run longer distances the stronger my body will get.
The marathon journey comes to an end. I am humbled by all the support I have received from so many of you on this journey. Too many names to give a shout out but I will give a special mention to a John O'Brien and Cindy Koon who everytime I saw them kept pushing me to get better. Between them they must have a record number of PBs for a year.
For the faster runners at ELR I have gained so much respect for you. I have seen the time and dedication you make to training. I use to think you were just born fast. It's amazing the hard work and dedication you all put in. So many inspiring people.
For the not so fast runners I think training and gaining knowledge can make such a big difference. I believe I have come a long way this year and I believe everyone can continue to get better. I hope to continue to learn, train and improve. I managed to reduce my times from the start of the year :
5k 28.35 - 23.28
5m 50.02- 43.48
10k 1hr2 - 55.1 . I ran around 51 mins at race for life but the distance was not correct so they adjusted the time.
HM 2.35.36 - 1.56.57
Marathon -7.40.35 (virtual) -4.39.35 I think I will take it as a PB.
After the marathon my initial thoughts were I don't want to do it again but with the knowledge and experience I have gained I have a feeling I will be back to set a new PB.

Chingford League - Event 1 - Eastbrookend Country Park (4 miles) - Saturday 1st October 2022

The Winter League season got off to a flying start on Saturday 1st October, with the Chingford League race at Eastbrookend Park, Dagenham. We had 23 finishers which was good considering the London Marathon that was being held the next day. The conditions were perfect on a mild early October morning, with the sun breaking through at times. The heavy rain a day before had not made much difference to the ground, which was still very firm underfoot with only the odd puddle here and there.

The original five mile course was to be 1.5 laps of the Country Park, followed by one large lap of Central Park then finishing back in the Country Park with one lap. The course was a mixture of trail and grass. Due to an error, the runners were directed back to the finish after a distance of just over four miles.

There were some very good individual performances from ELR with Julie Campbell, Tommy Ho and Thomas Hyde all making their first appearances for the club. In addition, Cindy Koon and Rachel Bailey both made their Chingford League debuts.

First to finish for the women’s team, with an outstanding run was the impressive Rachel Bailey, who finished 4th woman and in 45th position overall. She was followed by stalwarts Caroline Frith (77th), Becky Evans (94th), Sandra Preston (154th), Cindy Koon (159th) and Katrina Betteridge (169th), completing the scoring for the women’s ‘A’ team. The ever reliable Grace Turner, Alexandra Rutishauser-Perera, Fiona Day and Julie Campbell on her return to the club, all scored for the women’s ‘B’ team.

The mighty Joe Gunn, who was making his final appearance for ELR before he sets off on his travels, was the first to finish for the Men’s team in 13th position. Not far behind Joe was newcomer Thomas Hyde, who stormed home in 19th position, followed by the staunch Mark Moir (43rd). The ‘A’ team scoring was completed by the consistent Amit Marks (49th), newcomer Tommy Ho with a great start to his ELR career (62nd) and club Chair, Jacob Stevens (89th).
The next runners and scorers for the Men’s ‘B’ team were super-vets Clive Stephenson (106th), John O’Brien (149th), Kieran Brown - also on his return to the club (155th) and Mark Durrant (165th), Ramesh Pala (167th) and Michael Wilson (174th) completing the scoring. Finally, John Healy was just behind Mike in 179th position. There were 237 finishers.

Thanks to co-captain Karan Gadhia for baking cakes, taking photos and giving us support; Caroline Frith for the chocolate flapjacks and Vivienne Eka who just missed the race start, but stayed to support as well.

Where does this leave us in the league tables, after the first fixture? There are 19 clubs competing altogether and the team results are split up into two leagues.

ELR Women are 3rd (out of 8) and their ‘B’ team 4th (out of 19). The Women’s Vets are 5th (out of 19).

ELR Men are 5th (out of 8) and their ‘B’ team 5th (out of 19). The Men’s Vets are 9th (out of 19).

We have started very well and I cannot emphasise enough how important it is for everyone in the club to take part and support the team, no matter your standard. I look forward to seeing you all at the next Chingford League race, at the Velopark in Stratford, on Wednesday 12th October. There will be no club run on that night.

Elvis 8: East London Runners Valentines Park 5km - Saturday 25th September 2022

Scott's report: So, that's it, the last slice of ELVIS 2022 has been consumed. And what a fine cake it was, made of all the finest ingredients: layers of team spirit and healthy competition, all topped off with the decorations of individual glory and perhaps one or two jammy wins. Time to pick over the crumbs of the last event of the series, our own Valentines Park 5k, and reflect on the final results of a fabulous series of baking…er, I mean racing.
We had 45 finishers on the day, but we wouldn't have had any finishers or even starters had it not been for the efforts of the 42 volunteers who organised and set up the event, cheered and cajoled us round the 21 ninety degree corners on the course (yes, I counted), handed out water, and – arguably most importantly – staffed the cake stall. So a MASSIVE thanks to you all for making it such a great day , arranging for the sun to shine was a particularly nice touch. Prizes on the day went to Joshua Rees Davies for his second place in a PB of 16:16, to Nacho Aguirre Rodríguez for proving he is much more than just an ultra runner with third place, to an in form John Henry as first V40, to Becky Evans (who else?) as first V50, and to king of the sprint finish John Atkinson as the ELVIS series's first ever V80 trophy winner.
By packing four runners into the top five, and with eight runners clocking under 18 minutes (by comparison, we only had two at this race last year!), our men's team had a day that showed just how strong a team we are capable of turning out. We topped the ELVIS scoring with a first six of Joshua, Jose, John, Ryan Friel, me and Joe Gunn. Further down the field I can see 5k PBs for Redmond Shannon, Ian Mackie and Joe Preston , well done all of you. There were some similarly outstanding performances from our womens team too , they were led home by Rachel Bailey who wrapped up an outstanding debut season with her first sub 20, and the next five scorers were Betty Bohane, Caroline Frith, Becky, Sarah Burns and Chloe Millan. Despite their efforts they finished third thanks to strong turnouts from Eton Manor and Ilford. Cath Perry, Katy Betteridge and Cindy Koon were three more to defy those 21 pesky corners and achieve new PBs.
The winner takes all nature of the final ELVIS shootout in the womens series means that Eton Manor are crowned champions, and our team third overall, despite us taking a couple of superb wins at the second and fourth races. Our men tied with Eton Manor with four wins and two second places each, but lost the series on the countback of points scored in those races, the fact Eton Manor were able to pack out the top ten at Chingford, Harold Wood and Barking had made that a foregone conclusion before these results were out. So, well done to us for some really great efforts this year, and many congratulations to Eton Manor for winning an exciting and unpredictable series which has been conducted in a great spirit of friendly local rivalry.
The men's individual series was dominated by our Joshua, a truly incredible debut series with three wins and three second places meant he was well clear. Thanks to the peculiarities of the ELVIS scoring system (and, I'll be honest, a few better runners than me not getting their six races in, this is the jammy win I was talking about) I've ended up with an unexpected third place in the series for a second year in a row. Also getting a series ranking for their best six out of eight scores were Robert Spread (8th, 6th V40), Mark Moir (17th), Shahib Ali (19th), Jimmy Dale (23rd), Calvin Bobin (29th, 4th V60), Ian Mackie (31st, 5th V60), Michael Bamford (32nd, 6th V50), Jacob Stevens (35th), Darminder Bhamra (37th, 8th V50), Michael Wilson (40th, 7th V60), John O'Brien (44th, 9th V50), Andrew Howard (50th, 9th V60), and John Atkinson (69th, 3rd V70).
For our womens team, Becky Evans will pick up the V50 series prize after completely bossing the category this year, winning 7 out of 8 races (and the only one she lost was to a non_ELVIS runner!). Our highest ranked female overall was Betty, finishing just outside the prizes in 5th, followed by Becky (7th), Caroline (8th, 4th V40), Kathryn Hertzberg (14th), Sandra Preston (16th, 4th V50), Katy Betteridge (17th), Cindy Koon (20th, 8th V40), Fiona Day (27th, 3rd V60) and Anna Dingle (33rd). Tremendous work from you all.
So, time to take down the cake stands , for now, but not for long, as the winter running season begins just next weekend, and if there is one thing that is synonymous with it is cake. Signing off as ELVIS captain, I just want to thank all of you who've turned out in your red shirts to run or cheer for all you've done to make this such a lip-smacking concoction of a series , writing this has made me very proud (and also a little hungry!). Warwickshire Bear Ultra (60km) - Sunday 18th September 2022

This out and back 63k route took us from Rugby to Leamington Spa and back again. About 40% road and 60% gravel/trail combined with almost no hills made the only really difficult aspect of the race the distance. Even the weather was helpful with cool but not uncomfortable temperatures early on and cloud cover in the afternoon.
These factors combined with generously spaced aid stations every 5 miles or so (all at pubs/halls and with toilets!) would make this an ideal first ultra - you've all got a year to get ready!
I, on the other hand, hadn't spent a year getting ready for this and had most recently spent a lot of time hiking, rather than running, up mountains. So it was a welcome change to be able to run the whole thing. As is usual with these races, I initially fell into step with a few other runners at various points, including one who, amazingly, hasn't been running as much as a year! Another got a place at UTMB but wasn't able to take it due to a horrible string of injuries.
But most of the race was spent plodding along on my own, punctuated with about six times when my brother Jon found me en route. The boost of having someone in your corner like that is amazing! So I just kept running. Through countryside, past a beautiful lake and finally back through Rugby. I passed a couple of walkers in the last few miles and though nothing of it, but apparently snuck into 10th place.
What a grand day out!
