An Evening with Charlie Spedding - Tuesday 23rd March 2010

An Evening with Charlie Spedding
One of our own great sporting heroes shares his
INCREDIBLE RUNNING STORY at Run and Become.

Tuesday 23 March | Start 6pm
Last to First – book talk with Charlie Spedding
Admission Free but registration required

From Last To First is Charlie's story in Charlie's own words. It is
a story full of setbacks and adverstiy, of determination and
commitment, and of love for the sheer joy of running. It is a story
to fascinate anyone who enjoys sport.

Charlie Spedding is the English record holder for the marathon, a
winner of the London Marathon, and the last British athlete, male or
female, to win a medal in the Olympic Marathon.

When Charlie first went to school he was almost bottom of the class,
and he was even worse at sport. He and his teachers shared a very low
opinion of his abilities, but then he found something he was good at.
As he devoted himself to it, he gradually improved. After years of
dedication he eventually became world class. He literally went from
last to first.

This book is about running, because it was running that Charlie was
good at, but the story he tells has a message for everybody: find
what you are good at, and then become the best you can - at whatever
it is.

McCain's Athletics Networks - Dec 2009

England Athletics recently considered and declined an application bid from a new North East London Network of Running Clubs. Whilst East London Runners was not party to being a Member of the full bid team, we expressed an interest in being a "future engaged club", we are very disappointed with the decision made.

McCain announces £5 million sponsorship of UK Athletics.

Growing UK talent from the ground up

21st July 2008

McCain today announces a five year sponsorship deal to become Principal Partner of UK Athletics and Title Sponsor of the Young Athletes League and UK Challenge events.

McCain's £5 million sponsorship over the next five years is a long term commitment to the sport that will have a significant impact on the development of athletic talent in the UK and will increase the opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in the sport.

McCain has partnered with UK Athletics to develop Britain's raw athletic talent through sponsorship of grassroots athletics. As Title Sponsor, McCain's backing will support young UK athletes as they work to achieve their potential via participation in the Young Athletes League and the UK Challenge events.

Essex Way Relay Race - Sunday 5th September 2010

The Essex Way relay is a race that starts at Epping railway station to the town of Harwich. The relay follows a long distance footpath that crosses the Essex countryside from the southwest of the county to the northeast and measures a
distance of 81 miles. The distance is divided into 10 legs ranging between 7-12 miles. ELR as through the years attended this popular event up until the relay was not held for a period of several years.

The race was again brought back, being organised by Thurrock Nomads. Since the come back we have fielded a team each year. Last year we managed to put out two teams!! After the 2008 race we were notified that Thurrock Nomads would be standing down from organising the event. They approached us, along with several other clubs, to share the organising of future Essex Way races.

A meeting was sheduled for the begining of April, for all interested clubs to send a representative along to speak on behalf of their respective club. Edward kindly agreed to go on our behalf. Without boring you to much at the outcome of the meeting it was agreed that ELR along with Ilford Athletic club would support the 1st leg from Epping station to Chipping Ongar.

Members will be given all details on the different legs, distances and what we need to do as a club to support the 1st leg nearer the race date.

Flora London Marathon - Sunday 25th April 2010 - Drink Station Briefing - East London Runners

I am sending you this letter either because you have already offered to help staff the Drinks Station at Poplar High St, London E14 or you have helped out in previous years.

The Drinks Station is jointly organised by East London Runners and the London Fire Brigade. You are welcome to bring family and friends along with you, but please note (given the safety issues below) that this event is not suitable for children under 10 years old.

For the fifth year we will be located adjacent to Tower Hamlets College(see enclosed map). This is the 20 mile point on the course and will means that we will finish about 2.30pm. Geoff Clennell will once again be providing a sound system to add to he local atmosphere. And Peter Cowup will add the "scintillating" commentary.

Parking is limited, try the roads to the north of Poplar High St, but you may get blocked in by the closed roads. Please use Docklands Light Railway and get off at Poplar. Come down the stairs or lifts and pass between the College and Sports Centre.

Please try to arrive by 9.00am so that you can help set up. We have 40,000 bottles of water to distribute and set out ready for the expected 34,000 runners.

Safety - please read: Although the roads are closed there will be some traffic official or local moving through the station. Please be alert and keep the road clear at all imes. Competitors will follow the blue line on the road showing the shortest route. Please be careful with the sharp knives provided to cut open the packaging and do not overload the tables as they may collapse (2 layers only).

Setting up: we will have between 150-200 people helping out, divided between 12 tables. Each table will have an experienced table captain to co-ordinate things. The water station will be set up on both sides of the road, over a distance of 150m.

Clothing: We always hope for good weather, but bring waterproofs in case. All ELR helpers will receive Vittel shirts and hats as usual. Please wear them.

Refreshments/toilets: These are provided in St Mathias Church hall, where we will provide a buffet (which is free for all helpers), tea and coffee and access to toilets. This year I will be running the marathon so if you can help out during the day, Pam, my wife, would appreciate the chance to look out for me as I go by.

Security: We have had a problem in the past with theft of water by local people, but the fencing has addressed this. If you experience any problems let the stage area know immediately, so that appropriate response or police can be involved. If you have any valuables please take care. Do not hide them under tables, they will get wet. And once the tables run out of water, the tables will be folded up and cleared. Some valuables can be kept at the hall and locked up there.

Clearing up: We try our best to clear up at the end, many hands make light work and your help will mean this unpopular job can be completed in the shortest time possible. Bags, bins, brooms and shovels available.

Fire Brigade: This is the ninth year the Brigade has been involved at the feed station, their help is appreciated and they use the chance to promote alarms and fire safety messages to the local community in the borough of Tower Hamlets.

Many thanks for your help and have a good day.
Don Bennett

Club Kit Night

The first Wednesday in every month is "Club Kit" night. Please try to remember to wear your club vest or t-shirt on these nights.

Sunday Morning Runs

There are pre-marathon, Sunday morning runs taking place starting at various different localities, if you are interested in putting in some mileage before the marathon, or just for the fun of it. Then all you have to do is put yourself in contact with any member of the Committee who will be able to tell you who to speak to, for meeting points times etc.
