Club Routes
We have many routes - in the Winter months between October and April all of our Wednesday night runs are on pavements, mostly around the areas of Wanstead, Woodford and Ilford. A typical club run is around 6 miles, once in a while we'll do "Tomswood Hill", this is the longest and toughest run at around 7.5 miles - and a big hill! If you're not up to this distance, please do not worry, as most of our runs have short-cuts where you can start with the main group, but go back a shorter way.
On a Wednesday night we will appoint a "leader" for the first mile or so, basically this person will lead the route out of the centre at a fairly slow speed to keep the group together. After a mile faster runners will speed up to their own pace.
In the summer months, starting after the clocks go forward we will use as much off-road, parks, river footpaths and forest land as possible. We have a very enjoyable run on the longest day of the year, where two of our longest serving members, John & Karen White will lead the club on a mystery run in the forest. We are also promised the "bluebell run" in a fairly hidden part of Wanstead Park.
When we are running off-road during the summer, we cannot guarantee that there will not be any mud, therefore it is a good idea to bring some running shoes that you will not mind getting muddy. That way you will not be upset if you are wearing a pair of brand new top-of-the-range shoes!
When the club run is announced it's usually quoted as "Oak Hill", or "Barkingside", half of the members nod knowlingly and half have no idea where the run goes. The run is always gone through in detail, if you're not sure after it's been explained please ask myself as there is always a map available.
If anyone has any ideas for Wednesday night club runs then please speak to me on a Wednesday.
